One position available: Wed, Thur and Fri 5pm-9pm and Sunday 9am-9pm for a total of 24 hrs.

About Us

First Step Shelter is a transitional shelter for single men and women who have been homeless. Residents live with us while receiving services to stabilize their lives, get jobs, and find housing. Job Summary

The Access Control Point Officer is responsible to perform access control screening functions of employees, clients and visitors to the First Step Shelter. They are responsible for screening all persons entering either the shelter or Safe Zone to ensure the safety of employees, clients and visitors. The Access Control Point Officer does not act in the capacity of a law enforcement officer and has no arrest or apprehension powers.

Duties and Responsibilities

Responsible for screening and intake of all clients seeking entrance into the shelter and documenting intake information according FSS requirements and practices.
Required to follow all shelter personnel and safety policies and perform all assigned duties safely and professionally.
Required to provide exceptional customer service to meet, greet, and interact professionally with employees, clients, referral sources and the general public.
Must maintain poise and self-control at all times.
Demonstrates and maintains respect for shelter residents who are inside the shelter or in the outside holding area, must be evident at all times.
Will be required to ask standard screening questions for gate/building entry relating to security and COVID-19 and request any identification required for entry.
Will conduct forehead temperature scanning of any anyone entering the shelter .and record the results.
Will be required to wear personal protective equipment (face mask) and follow all policies and procedures regarding COVID-19.
Will assure all guests who are required wear personal protective equipment (face mask) and follow all policies and procedures regarding COVID-19.
Will control access to buildings and property, protect equipment and material, and perform interior and exterior facility security inspections as directed.
Will monitor video feed of all security cameras and report any unusual activity.
Will monitor the outdoor holding area of the shelter and report any unsafe or criminal activity to either shelter leadership or law enforcement as instructed.
Respond quickly to critical situations.
Ability to read and write detailed reports.
Enforce client regulations, procedures, and standards.
Must be able to work flexible hours when necessary and within reason.
Will follow all shelter policies and procedures.
Must be trained or willing to be trained in de-escalation techniques.
Will follow the documentation guidelines for the position and submit required reports in a timely manner.
Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications: (To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.)

De-escalation training preferred or must be willing to be trained in de-escalation techniques.
Minimum High School Diploma or GED.
Must be at least 18 years of age.
Prior customer service and/or prior civilian or security guard experience preferred.
Must possess and maintain a valid state driver’s license.
Have no record or history of illegal drug use, sale, possession, or manufacture during the previous five years.
Willing to take a drug test and submit to a background records check.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit and talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance and stoop, kneel, or crouch. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 35 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision.
