Part-Time Constable Position Available
The Town of Rochester is seeking qualified candidates to fill several positions of Part-Time Constable. This role involves performing peace officer duties as authorized by New York State law and the Town Board.
Position Overview:
The Town Constabulary provides public safety services, court security, and enforcement of certain local and state laws. Constables work under the general supervision of the Town Board, with discretion to exercise independent judgment in emergencies. While not a full police officer position, this role requires knowledge of legal procedures and public safety protocols.
Responsibilities:
Directing traffic and providing traffic control during road closures
Maintaining security at the Town Justice Court, including weapons screening
Enforcing parking regulations and issuing tickets for violations
Assisting law enforcement agencies when requested
Responding to emergency calls, making appropriate requests for assistance, and preparing reports
Serving legal papers, including subpoenas and court orders, on behalf of the Town Supervisor, Town Board, Justices, and Code Enforcement Office
Conducting follow-up visits or checks for Code Enforcement as needed
Making collections pursuant to executions issued upon judgments rendered in Justice Court
Providing security at Town meetings and special events as directed by the Town Supervisor or Town Board resolution
Qualifications & Skills:
High school diploma or equivalent
Working knowledge of New York State Penal Law, Criminal Procedure Law, and Vehicle & Traffic Law
Ability to remain professional, courteous, and firm when interacting with the public
Strong judgment and ability to respond appropriately in emergencies
Successful completion of the Basic Course for Peace Officers as prescribed by the Municipal Police Training Council and Initial Firearms (required for appointment)
Other courses as may be required to perform job duties
Authorization to possess and carry a handgun under New York State law
Possession of a valid New York State driver’s license
Employment is contingent upon the clearance of a background investigation.
This is a competitive position under Ulster County Civil Service. Appointees will be require to take the Civil Service Exam when it is scheduled through the county.
Hours and Schedule:
There are opportunities for both flexible weekly shift schedules and regular weekly shift schedules.
Regular hours are available during the week for court coverage, Monday – Thursday, 8:30 am – 4:00 pm. Evening and weekend hours are available for other community policing public safety services.
· Weekly schedule is dependent on assignment, officers are required to work one-shift per week
· There is a maximum of 20 hours per week for this position
· Evening and weekend hours may be required
· Additional hours for other community policing public safety services may be required.
Compensation & Benefits:
Pay range: $23.75 – $25.50 per hour
Part-time position with hours determined by assignment and need
