Overview
Corrections professionals in Vermont work in a system that believes in the basics of human change. Intensive training prepares entry-level Correctional Officers for a career that blends security work, human services, and leadership opportunities. This work is rewarding and requires a wide range of skills. Many permanent positions are filled through promotions from temporary roles, so external candidates are encouraged to apply for both temporary and permanent openings.
Training
The career begins with a week at the correctional facility observing the duties of a correctional officer. Then, six weeks of instruction are at the Vermont Correctional Academy, focusing on core correctional skills. After graduation, there are eighty hours of onsite training supervised by staff at your facility.
The start date depends on your availability. Positions operate on a 2-shift schedule: 6am – 6pm and 6pm – 6am. Shifts are assigned by seniority and facility needs.
Work Schedule and Benefits
Southern State Correctional Facility offers an innovative 2-2-3 schedule to improve work-life balance. This rotation involves working two days, two days off, then three days, repeating every two weeks, providing predictable hours, longer consecutive days off, and a 3-day weekend biweekly.

Candidates must pass background checks, including criminal record, DMV, and child/adult abuse registry checks, as per AHS Policy 4.02. Current classified employees seeking transfer or promotion and those exercising re-employment rights are exempt.
Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent plus two years of full-time work experience, or one year of college plus one year of work, or two years of college coursework.
Physical Requirements: Adequate physical condition to perform essential tasks, including donning a self-contained breathing apparatus and evacuation procedures, in compliance with OSHA standards.
Additional Requirements
Must pass a background investigation, including criminal, DMV, and abuse registry checks. Overtime and work on weekends/holidays may be required. Work involves high-stress situations, potential physical assault, and possibly transporting inmates outside the facility.
