Job Description

Position Summary

A Court Security Officer (CSO) is a specialized security position providing protective services at or around United States Federal Court Houses or other areas as assigned under a contract to the U.S. Marshals Service (USMS). CSOs generally provide security services under limited supervision from a Lead CSO and the District Supervisor who reports to the Contract Manager (CM). This is a union position.

The CSO performs fixed-post, mobile, or foot patrols, maintaining situational awareness and making decisions in accordance with post orders, facility rules, and protocols. Duties include working in austere conditions, inclement weather, and performing walking, standing, searching, surveillance, or sitting duties essential to security functions.

Responsibilities

Enforce the District’s entry and identification system.

Test and report emergency equipment.

Patrol court facilities and grounds.

Man USMS authorized stationary posts.

Provide surveillance on traffic to detect threats.

May provide armed escort services.

Provide security for off-site judicial functions.

Direct traffic, control lights, and monitor vehicles and pedestrians.

Provide courtroom security during hearings.

Enforce federal law and judicial orders within the courthouse.

Report incidents and unusual occurrences.

Monitor alarms, radio traffic, and other information sources.

Respond to alarms and requests for assistance.

Screen and inspect vehicles and pedestrians.

Use issued equipment properly.

Prevent passage of prohibited articles.

Escort individuals or vehicles as needed.

Maintain licensing, certifications, and training records.

Use communication devices appropriately.

Monitor equipment and report damages or losses.

Perform work regardless of weather conditions.

Log property and equipment movements.

Secure government property and detain personnel if necessary.

Conduct patrols and inspections.

Issue badges or passes to authorized personnel.

Monitor access control and RFID systems.

Grant access during non-working hours.

Report facility deficiencies.

Perform surveillance for unauthorized activity.

Support scheduled events and emergencies.

Maintain logs and administrative documents.

Cooperate with law enforcement and testify if needed.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements

High School Diploma or equivalent.

At least 21 years old.

Minimum of 3 years of verifiable civilian law enforcement experience or equivalent military law enforcement experience, including arrest authority, within the last 7 years.

Completion of a recognized law enforcement training academy.

Pass criminal background check, drug test, and physical exam.

Valid, unrestricted state driver’s license.

Fluent in English (reading, speaking, writing).

Meet medical and physical fitness requirements.

No felony convictions or misdemeanor domestic violence convictions.
