Position Information:

This is an Open Competitive recruitment to create an eligibility list for as needed vacancies throughout the school year. Incumbents will work 10 school months/per year and will work variable schedules, but will not exceed 40 hours worked/per week. Incumbents in this classification are responsible for patrolling school buildings, grounds, parking areas and areas adjacent to school property to maintain order and security. Applicants must submit proof of all required documents to be considered for the recruitment process.

GENERAL PURPOSE

Under general supervision, patrols school buildings, grounds, parking areas and areas adjacent to school property to maintain order and security; facilitates communication between students and staff to enhance understanding and promote a secure environment; and performs related duties as assigned.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

With direction from a Campus Security Supervisor or school administrator, incumbents patrol school buildings, grounds and adjacent areas to maintain order and security and to prevent illegal acts. This class is distinguished from Senior Campus Security Officer in that incumbents of the senior level class have lead responsibilities for Campus Security Officers at an assigned school where increased gang activity and the number of incidents add to the complexity of the work.

Duties

Patrols school buildings, yards, parking areas and adjacent areas to maintain order and security and prevent illegal acts; circulates on and adjacent to school campus to prevent altercations and campus disorder.

Observes and checks students or visitors who appear to be loitering and are out of class and determines appropriate action; checks and locks doors, windows and gates; operates a two-way radio as needed.

Supervises student conduct to prevent vandalism, theft and other illegal activities; observes and reports to law enforcement agencies acts by persons that contribute to delinquency or injury of students.

Controls crowds at athletic and special events to provide for physical safety of people and to prevent fights, property damage and misconduct; assists law enforcement personnel in apprehending students suspected of crimes.

Assists in directing emergency evacuations and other activities relating to the safety of individuals; observes and reports hazards or activities that might result in negligence or legal charges against the District or its personnel related to the treatment or safety of youth.

Provides information to students concerning the law as it applies to juveniles and community resources.

Prepares records and reports involving student referrals, crimes or incidents as assigned.

Performs investigations related to crimes; investigates incidents prior to escorting students to the school administrator’s office.

Facilitates communications between students, school and District officials and staff to enhance understanding and promote a secure environment; attends and participates in District conferences related to security.

Communicates with key leaders of local gangs; monitors local gang activities by establishing communications and effective relationships with gang leaders to minimize potential gang related incidents affecting campus security; monitors key gang members for weapon possession.

Responds to teacher requests for assistance in the classroom; assists in incidents involving students with weapons and/or under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

Provides students with transportation home for conferences with parents when students are ill.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of:

California state penal code sections related to juveniles.
Record keeping techniques.
Basic investigation techniques.
Basic interests and attitudes of adolescents.
Skills utilized to maintain positive relationships with students and adults.
Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy.
Health and safety regulations.
Individual and group behavior related to juveniles.

Ability to:

Patrol school buildings, yards, parking areas and adjacent areas to maintain order and prevent illegal acts.
Patrol and monitor campus to maintain order and security in a high school setting.
Assure student compliance with school and District policies and regulations.
Prepare records and reports involving incidents, field interviews, accidents, vandalism, crime, gangs and student detention.
Interpret, apply and explain rules, regulations, policies and procedures.
Perform duties with patience, tact and good judgment within established guidelines.
Facilitate communications between students, school and District officials and staff to enhance understanding and promote a secure environment.
Learn District organization, operations, policies and objectives.
Read and write English at a level required for successful job performance.
Understand and follow oral and written directions.
Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.
Observe situations and accurately determine effective courses of action.

Education, Training, and Experience:

Graduation from high school or G.E.D. equivalent.
Demonstrated experience working with youth in an organized setting.
One (1) year of full time paid or volunteer security experience.

Licenses; Certificates; Special Requirements:

A valid California driver’s license and the ability to maintain insurability under the District’s insurance policy.
Completion of a training course developed no later than July 1, 1999 by the Bureau of Security and Investigation Services of the Department of Consumer Affairs in consultation with the Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training pursuant to sections 7583.31 of the Business and Professional Code.
District security attire and equipment will be supplied at District expense.
