Job DescriptionReporting to the Director, Industrial Security and Emergency Measures, the holder of this position supervises the work of firefighters in his/her team. This person plans, controls and coordinates all facilities in the shipyard and on vessels in terms of fire prevention.
More Specifically, You Will
Plan the activities of your area to meet the needs of the various people involved by establishing priorities.
Inspect buildings as well as vessels under construction or in repair in order to ensure that safety policies and procedures are respected. As well, complete reports indicating conditions that are likely to cause a fire.
Regularly inform all personnel assigned to the various projects on the adequate ways of preventing fires.
Verify work procedures and ensure that they are followed according to safety standards.
Coordinate the inspection and maintenance of equipment related to firefighting.
Plan the weekly needs in labour and equipment needs that are necessary for work to be performed by your team.
Provide technical support within your activity area in resolving problems that may occur during the normal course of operations.
Oversee the temporary installation of equipment and devices used for fire protection on vessels under construction or in repair, in order to ensure that the various locations are protected against fires.
Participate in preparing and applying emergency response plans by establishing, in cooperation with the Fire Chief, the measures to be taken, the location of safety equipment and the preparation of emergency evacuation plans, in order to efficiently respond when accidents or fires occur. Direct your team during activities undertaken in a fire situation.
Accomplish, upon your superior’s request, any other task compatible with your duties.
Personnal Management
Manage the team of firefighters assigned to you in order to make them motivated, satisfied, loyal and effective team members who are committed to achieving the standards and the goals of the production team as well as the company in general.
Lead daily meetings in order to distribute the work between the firefighters and follow up on longer-term work.
Authorize the time sheets of each firefighter in your charge.
Ensure to make full use of available staff, in order to carry out tasks as efficiently as possible.
Collaborate with Industrial Safety managers in order to complete the performance evaluations, probationary and others, of the firefighters.
Make sure that all firefighters have the knowledge and capacity necessary to effectively fulfill their role. If not, the lieutenant will inform the fire chief of the failure to comply.
Respond in an appropriate way to any violations of the HSE policy.
Raise the actions requiring disciplinary measures while working with the fire chief and the human resources.
Requirements
The following diploma: DEP in Fire Safety Intervention.
Course in fire prevention (asset).
Officer course or relevant experience in personnel management.
Minimum five (5) years of experience or more related to the firefighting field.
Work experience in the industrial field.
Be organized, respect deadlines and be able to work under pressure.
Have leadership, know how to manage a work team.
Good knowledge of the MS Office suite.
