GENERAL PURPOSE AND SCOPE OF POSITION: The Assistant Vice President (AVP) reports to the Vice President for Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness (PSEP) and is responsible for strategic planning and initiatives, special projects and programs, department assessments, and direct supervision of Area Executive Directors. The AVP works collaboratively with department leadership, chancellors, campus stakeholders, and systems colleagues.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
Serve as the PSEP department administrator in the absence or unavailability of the Vice President.
Assist the Vice President in strategic planning and initiatives to maintain departmental mission, vision, and values for the advancement of the department and its delivery of high-level public safety services.
Align processes, resources planning and department goals with overall strategy.
Seek, develop, and lead innovative special projects and programs that will increase the competency of the department, improve upon public safety services, and enhance the overall safety of Ivy Tech campuses.
Continuously review current technology trends to position the College for the future.
Conduct assessments to ensure department programs and services are performing in accordance with established metrics, and are relevant to the department’s mission, vision, and values.
Conduct periodic department inspections to maintain uniformity, consistency, and continuity of purpose and operations.
Provide support and insight into significant department organizational changes.
Lead pilot programs and trials. Based on results, make, recommend, and implement adjustments and modifications.
Develop and maintain strong working relationships with System and campus colleagues and peers to foster collaboration on joint projects and initiatives.
Develop and maintain relationships with Systems Office and campus leadership to be able to anticipate direction, focus, and spoken and unspoken needs.
Network locally, regionally, statewide, and nationally in an effort to stay abreast of best practices in campus public safety, and to develop resources such as grant opportunities, executive training, equipment, and government services.
Assist department Executive Directors in their respective areas as needed.
Engage in professional development on a continuous basis.
Develop and implement training initiatives for the department.
Serve as a model for strong leadership and develop and support the campus culture of team collaboration and commitment to delivering high quality services and outcomes by being student and employee centered.

All responsibilities will be conducted within the parameters of the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), other applicable regulatory requirements, and professional standards.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Vice President for Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness
SUPERVISION GIVEN: Executive Director for Environmental Health and Safety and Executive Director for Emergency Management and Continuity.
HIRING RANGE: $110,000 – $120,000 depending on professional experience, education/credentials, and skill.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Bachelor’s degree required, master’s degree preferred.
A minimum of 10 years of experience in Security, Public Safety, or Law Enforcement, preferably in higher education, showing a progression of responsibility and leadership.
Must have excellent written and oral communication skills.
Must possess excellent organizational, planning, evaluation, and interpersonal skills.
Ability to partner well with colleagues both in and outside of the organization.
Must be willing and available to travel within the state for work and occasional out-of-state travel for appropriate professional development.
