Description

Under moderate supervision, performs first-line field supervision over Security Officers who are responsible for patrolling and protecting Metro employees, patrons, property, equipment, assets, revenues, and facilities, and to ensure that Metro provides safety and excellent customer service. Note Transit Security Sergeant is an exempt classification and may be required to work additional assignments as determined by management. When working additional assignments, employees will receive premium overtime pay as stipulated by the collective bargaining agreement. This position is exempt; however, it is coded as “non-exempt” for Payroll purposes only.

Examples of Duties

Exercises direct supervision over security personnel assigned for a particular shift/watch in patrolling and securing Metro personnel, passengers, property, equipment, assets, revenues, and facilities
Creates daily deployment schedule and conducts daily briefing for office
Advises subordinate staff on methods and procedures of transit security
Enforces rules, policies, regulations, orders, and Metro’s code of conduct
Receives, interviews, and responds to customer and employee complaints regarding security issues
Conducts first-line investigations of major incidents, administrative investigations, and Use of Force Investigations
Prepares written reports and correspondence
Conducts security reviews and prepares written evaluations and recommendations/plans for increasing security at Metro facilities and operations
Interprets federal, state, and local laws, and Metro policies and procedures, including a Department’s operations instructions
Assists in monitoring compliance and performance of private contract security programs and staff
Coordinates and communicates with appropriate Metro departments, security, and/or law enforcement agencies on cases involving security or criminal activities
Provides security training to subordinates
May perform the duties of Watch Commander in the absence of Transit Security Lieutenant
Contributes to ensuring that the Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) policies and programs of Metro are carried out

Minimum Qualifications

A combination of education and/or experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the position. Additional experience, as outlined below, may be substituted for required education on a year-for-year basis. A typical combination includes:

Education

Associates Degree in Criminal Justice, Business, Public Administration, or other related field

Experience

Three years of relevant experience in security or law enforcement

Certifications/Licenses/Special Requirements

Valid California Class C Driver License

Must have a valid California Firearm permit issued by the Department of Consumer Affairs

Must have a valid California Guard Card issued by the Department of Consumer Affairs

Must qualify with and carry a firearm while on duty

Requires good physical condition with complete mobility and sensory abilities

Must successfully pass a Department of Security background investigation and psychological evaluation

May be required to travel to various locations

May be required to work irregular hours

Exposure to weather and physical hazards

Must have normal color vision

Positions in this job classification are considered safety-sensitive and subject to drug and alcohol testing, including random testing, under Federal Transit Administration (FTA) regulations

Pension Plan – PTSC retirement plan is the Public Employees’ Retirement System (PERS). Vesting is five (5) years. Minimum retirement age is 52, based on the 2% at 62 formula.
