Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Enforce all city, state, federal laws, and University rules and regulations.
Patrol assigned areas by foot, bike or motor vehicle and maintain an individual activity log.
Ensure that buildings and gates are locked and unlocked at appropriate time.
Apprehension and arrest of prisoners.
Take incident and accident reports. Investigate incidents and collect evidence.
Inspect buildings and vehicles, report all safety and security problems and complete Facility Operations Work Request forms when necessary.
Render assistance to persons as circumstances necessitate. Perform motorist assist, such as lockout and jump start, when requested.
Traffic control during accidents and special events. Perform security function and crowd control at special events.
Perform Officer in Charge responsibilities when assigned.
Perform other related duties as assigned or requested.
Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications

Experience: Two to Five years as a Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES) licensed police officer or equivalent state licensing with the ability to obtain MCOLES licensure, if needed.

Preferred Qualifications

Education: A two-year college degree or completion of a specialized course of study at a business or trade school.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Two years’ experience in law enforcement is required; as is obtaining and maintaining firearms proficiency and PA330 security officer licensing.
Must carry handgun that meets with the University of Detroit Mercy Department of Public Safety requirements, and must be in possession and keep current a valid Michigan Concealed License Permit.
Computer skills are necessary (Microsoft Office products desired).
Excellent written, oral and interpersonal communication skills are necessary.

Physical Requirements

Job may require lifting light weight objects (10 to 25 pounds) with no repetitive bending or stooping. Occasionally lift average weight objects (10 to 25 pounds). Must be able to pass a preemployment medical exam that meets or exceeds the MCOLES officer requirements prior to hire.

Work Environment

Exposure to favorable and at times unfavorable weather conditions such as those found in working a shift in an outdoor setting. Some indoor work in a favorable environment. Some prolonged periods of walking, sitting, or standing.

Work hours are as assigned by supervision normally with a minimum of 40 hours per week; voluntary and mandated overtime is possible. Must be available to work weekends and holidays as scheduled.
Working special events (graduation, homecoming, etc.) is required, as is working any shift needed.

$23.4923/hour

Valid Michigan Driver’s License in good standing and maintained.
Valid Michigan Concealed Pistol License in good standing and maintained.
Active or Inactive MCOLES Law Enforcement Officer Licensure.
