Job Summary

The RIT Public Safety Department is a 24/7 operation, 365 days/year. This position is responsible for serving and protecting a community covering the entire 1,300-acre university campus with approximately 19,000 students and 4,000 faculty and staff.

Responsibilities

Respond promptly to service requests including quality of life complaints, utility interruptions, suspicious persons, money escorts, high-risk area checks, motorist assists, lockouts, found property, emergency notifications, noise complaints, and other community reports.

Act as first responder and preliminary investigator for campus incidents such as robberies, theft, assault, workplace violence, bias crimes, environmental issues, fires, alarms, fights, medical emergencies, drug-related incidents, missing persons, animal complaints, vehicle accidents, and policy violations.

Follow up on reported disputes and incidents to ensure timely resolution.

Participate in training and courses to maintain skills, including firearms certification, SERT training, defensive tactics, first aid, and use of force.

Qualifications

High School diploma or GED.

NYS Security Guard License.

At least 1 year of related experience in campus or public safety, law enforcement, military, or security fields.

Effective communication skills, including willingness to learn sign language.

Ability to handle stressful situations with sound judgment.

Basic computer skills.

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, sociology, or related field.

Possession of a New York State Armed Guard License or Pistol Permit.

Experience in campus or municipal policing, military policing, or related fields with firearms training.

Additional Details

The position involves working various shifts, including afternoon, overnight, holidays, and special events, with differential pay and overtime as needed. The role requires a pre-employment motor vehicle check and compliance with RIT’s Safe Driving Policy.
