Position Title: School Safety and Security Coordinator

Department: District-wide

Reports to: Superintendent or designee

Classification: Classified Exempt

Contract Period: 210 days as determined annually

Salary: $75,000-$95,000 starting salary DOE

Position Summary

The School Safety and Security Coordinator at Aspen School District is responsible for maintaining a safe and secure environment for students, employees, and visitors. Implements and manages programs to address security and school safety needs effectively, with a focus on prevention. This role involves developing, establishing, and enforcing safety and security policies, access control procedures, risk management, emergency management, asset protection/theft prevention, parking control, and traffic enforcement programs. Coordinate a comprehensive school safety program, collaborate with local law enforcement agencies, and work closely with the Superintendent, school administrators, and the Aspen School District community on all aspects of school safety. Additionally, the School Safety and Security Coordinator develops and oversees safety training programs, monitors school safety components in improvement plans, and serves as the point of contact for media communication regarding school safety matters.

Position Responsibilities

Develop and implement comprehensive safety, security, and emergency operations plans (EOP) that align with district goals and regulations
Conduct regular safety audits in compliance with federal, state and local regulations to identify vulnerabilities and recommend improvements
Design and maintain policies and procedures for school behavioral threat assessment, including ensuring training and management at each school site
Oversees and manages the district safety committee which is a multidisciplinary team including school administrators, SROs, local law enforcement and other local public safety agencies
Participates in building safety committee meetings
Collaborate with district staff and community partners to support evidence-based prevention programs addressing bullying, substance abuse, mental health challenges, and online safety
Conducts and coordinates safety, security and emergency preparedness training by developing, scheduling and/or facilitating training for staff, students and public safety officials relating to school safety, security and emergency preparedness (Standard Response Protocol/Emergency Notification System)
Develop and maintain the District’s Reunification Plan, including, but not limited to, all Memorandums of Understanding with partnering agencies. Facilitate table-top scenarios with local first responders and partnering agencies to maintain proficiency in on—and off-campus reunifications.
Secures facilities, equipment, students and personnel by working in conjunction with the appropriate departments in maintaining and safety and security equipment/software (Genetec, Raptor, PS, CTMAP, Intellispark) and recommending upgrades
Maintains records of fire and other emergency drills and conducting school site drills when appropriate
Supervises and maintains access control including site access and key card distribution
Serves as a liaison with local public safety agencies – works directly with local public safety agencies during critical incident situations and follow-up
Works with appropriate departments to meet operational security needs within budget; works with Finance and Facilities departments for capital improvements as needed; schedules expenditures
Assists the human resources department in regards to workers compensation claims and employee safety programs.
Communicates with the media involving school safety as necessary
Participates in annual training to stay current on laws, policies and procedures regarding school safety.
Manages school site traffic, parking lot enforcement and safety
Attends and presents at school board meetings as requested
Perform other duties as assigned to support the district’s safety and prevention goals.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of:

Minimum Qualifications

Three years of relevant experience
Valid Colorado driver’s license or the ability to obtain one within 30 days of hire.

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree

Experience in school safety, government, or other public sector settings.
ICS certification (must be willing to complete applicable courses within the first year of employment)

Work Environment

Office and outdoor environment; exposure to computer screens
Primary functions may require maintaining the physical condition necessary for sitting for prolonged periods of time; use of a computer keyboard

Essential Physical Requirements

Physical: Reaching, walking, standing, sitting, typing, talking, stooping, kneeling, seeing, and hearing. Lifting up to 40lbs.
