General Overview

The Security Officer is responsible for maintaining a safe and secure environment for patients, visitors, and hospital staff within an acute psychiatric hospital setting. This role involves monitoring the hospital premises, managing access control, responding to emergency situations, and assisting clinical staff in de-escalating potentially dangerous situations involving psychiatric patients. The Security Guard Officer will work in a highly sensitive environment and must be able to respond calmly and professionally to high-stress situations.

Key Responsibilities:

Ensure Safety & Security: Monitor the hospital grounds, including patient care areas, entrances, and parking lots to prevent unauthorized access, theft, and vandalism.
Access Control: Manage and monitor hospital entrances, checking for authorized personnel, patients, and visitors. Enforce visitor control policies to ensure safety and confidentiality.
Emergency Response: Respond promptly to emergency situations, including patient outbursts, aggressive behavior, medical emergencies, fire alarms, and other critical incidents. Support clinical staff in crisis situations and assist with safe patient management.
Incident Reporting: Document and report all security incidents, including breaches, disturbances, and suspicious activity, in accordance with hospital policies. Prepare detailed written reports after each shift or incident.
Surveillance: Operate and monitor security systems, including cameras, alarm systems, and other surveillance technology to detect and prevent any security risks.
Assist Clinical Staff: Collaborate with nurses, doctors, and other healthcare staff to ensure that psychiatric patients are safely managed in potentially volatile situations. Help in escorting patients to different areas of the hospital, if necessary.
Physical Patrols: Conduct regular foot patrols of the facility, including locked units, psychiatric wards, and high-risk areas, to maintain order and monitor for security breaches or patient safety issues.
Crisis Intervention: Provide immediate intervention in situations where patients exhibit dangerous or aggressive behavior. Use non-violent crisis intervention techniques in accordance with hospital procedures.
Enforce Hospital Policies: Ensure compliance with all hospital policies and regulations, especially those related to patient care, confidentiality, and emergency response.
Training & Preparedness: Participate in ongoing training, including crisis intervention, de-escalation techniques, and emergency procedures specific to psychiatric healthcare environments.

Qualifications:

Education: High School diploma or equivalent preferred. Additional training or certifications in security or law enforcement are preferred.
Experience: Prior experience working in a security role, particularly in healthcare or psychiatric environments, is preferred.
Certifications: CPR and First Aid certifications preferred. Certification in Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (NVCI) or similar de-escalation techniques required. CPI certification to be acquired within 30 days of hire.
Skills and Competencies:
Strong verbal and written communication skills.
Ability to remain calm and professional in high-stress situations.
Excellent observation and problem-solving skills.
Ability to physically intervene when necessary, including restraining individuals who pose a threat to themselves or others.
Knowledge of security protocols and emergency response procedures.

Physical Requirements:

Must be physically capable of performing regular patrols, standing for long periods, and responding quickly to emergencies.
Ability to lift or restrain individuals when required.

Working Conditions:

The position involves working in an acute psychiatric hospital environment, which includes exposure to patients experiencing severe mental health crises.
May be exposed to challenging and volatile situations, including aggressive behavior from patients.
Rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays, may be required.
