Metro’s Capital Asset Management department is seeking a dynamic, variable hour Safety and Security Officer to help create a safe, welcoming atmosphere at the Metro Regional Center, Metro’s headquarters. In this role, you’ll be the first point of contact for staff, visitors, and community partners, providing exceptional customer service while ensuring the security of the building and grounds. This is an opportunity to hands-on experience in emergency response and safety procedures. With an average of 20 hours a month, this position offers the perfect balance for someone seeking flexible, intermittent work. As the Safety and Security Officer you will:

Deliver exceptional customer service by providing helpful information, directions and answering questions; responds promptly to medical emergencies by administering first aid and medical assistance as necessary.
Monitors security systems including building alarm panels, video/audio surveillance and computer output. Records relevant events and fills out incident reports to ensure safety and compliance.
Identifies and reports issues with facility conditions, equipment and safety concerns to lead or management. Maintains accurate detailed logs of all activities to ensure accountability and transparency.
Conducts regular patrols on foot, performing random inspections of assigned areas to uphold Metro’s safety and security policies, standards and regulations.
Supports building staff with equipment rental and vehicle fleet car pick up, ensuring smooth operations and quick turnaround for staff needs.
Assists medical personnel with traffic management, crowd control and securing needed equipment during emergencies. Maintains consistent communications with supervisors and Campus Operations staff to ensure a coordinated response.
Manages building access by locking and unlocking of buildings, outdoor area furniture, according to requested needs, special requests and event schedules.
Monitor and acts to direct vehicle and pedestrian traffic to ensure smooth flow and minimize congestion, especially during peak time or during high-traffic events.
Collaborates as needed with other security, Metro staff, or volunteers, helping with security and safety-related issues. Provides coverage for front desk as needed.
Takes on additional responsibilities and performs related duties as assigned, contributing to a dynamic and supportive team environment.

Knowledge of and ability to administer first aid, CPR and AED, as well as use radios and other security equipment effectively.
Ability to handle sensitive matters with discretion, ensuring confidentiality and professionalism in all interactions.
Ability to work independently and with minimal supervision.
Ability to write clear, concise and accurate reports that communicate key information effectively.
Reasonable knowledge of occupational and material hazards to identify and address potential risks in the workplace environment.

TO QUALIFY

Minimum qualifications

High school diploma or G.E.D. and
Six months of safety or security experience and the physical ability to perform assignments or
Any combination of education, professional, volunteer and lived experience that provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the classification duties and responsibilities.

Required:

Current Oregon Department of Public Safety Standards and Training certification (DPSST)
Possession of or the ability to obtain; First Aid, CPR and AED certification.

Shift and schedule: Your schedule will vary based on operational needs, weather conditions, and special events at the Metro Regional Center. There is no fixed schedule, it is an on-call as needed position.

Variable hour positions are limited to 1040 hours of work in a 12-month period.

Previous experience working a public agency or community organization.
Previous experience working in a dynamic customer service oriented job.
