Campus Security Officers are responsible for the comfort, safety, and security of the students, faculty, staff, and visitors to the University of New England. Security Officers maintain a safe environment and minimize the potential for loss or damage of all property controlled by the University of New England by conducting high visibility patrols on foot and in University-owned vehicles, monitoring CCTV equipment, and monitoring radio communications. Officers provide a wide variety of services to our campus community, and are expected to proactively seek opportunities to provide excellent customer service.
Security Officers enforce the University of New England rules and regulations, the Office of Student Resolutions Conduct Code, and coordinate with law enforcement in enforcing state statutes. Security Officers have a critical role as first responders to campus emergencies and critical incidents such as active threat situations, bomb threats and mental health emergencies. Security Officers respond to disturbances and mitigate disruptive conduct and coordinate with local, county and state agencies as necessary. Security Officers recognize potential safety concerns and take measures to mitigate these concerns.
Security Officers day-to-day activities include routine patrols of campus property, completing daily building opening and closings and parking enforcement.

Expected pay is $21/hour.

Responsibilities
Defend self and others from unauthorized use of non-deadly force using departmentally trained techniques as necessary, including but not limited to the use of pepper spray and handcuffs
Patrol University property to prevent and detect signs of intrusion, theft, and life safety concerns and maintain safety during Campus events. This includes making regular inspection tours of campus noting unusual occurrences and ensuring all necessary doors and buildings are properly secured
Monitor persons in buildings and/or on campus. Watch for unauthorized persons, suspicious/criminal activity, disturbances, fights and campus policy violations, report to proper authorities
Investigate suspicious activity, security issues, and criminal incidents. Gather and process necessary evidence and properly document in verbal and written reports
Respond to campus disturbances (i.e. disorderly conduct, underage drinking parties, illicit drug use) and complete room searches as necessary
Respond to campus emergencies including critical incidents, all hazards situations and active threat situations (i.e. active shooter, bomb threat, mental health, weather emergencies)
Contact the on-call supervisor as needed for emergency situations
Maintain complete awareness of the University of New England property, life safety systems, and emergency plans including the proper use of fire extinguishers
Respond to accidents and medical emergencies and provide First Aid, CPR, Narcan and/or Stop the Bleed as necessary
Contact local police and fire departments as necessary and act as a liaison between these agencies and the University as needed
Maintain complete knowledge of and comply with all University and departmental standard operating procedures
Provide prompt, courteous service to students, staff, and visitors including medical and courtesy escorts on campus
Escort students, staff, and visitors to various locations on Campus and provide protection as necessary
Escort and remove persons from Campus as needed
Ensure resolution of any safety concerns noted during your shift, including submitting work orders or notifying on-call staff to correct the issues
Monitor and regulate building systems as necessary including building boilers as well as refrigerator and freezer units and notifying Facilities as needed
Monitor CCTV and review as necessary for security and investigations
Answer telephone calls to take messages, answer questions and provide information
Enforce University rules & regulations and notify violators of infractions including the issuance of parking tickets
Write clear, concise incident reports including any supplemental supporting information (pictures, video, etc.)
Coverage at designated campus athletic events
Campus snow removal operations
Cross training as Dispatcher and Safe Ride operator preferred
Provide public assistance such as lock out services, jump-starts and routine information
Assist administration with investigations as assigned
Maintain the confidentiality of all departmental and University information and paperwork
Complete all mandatory departmental Police One trainings
Flexibility to work other shifts as needed on a short notice
All other duties as required

Qualifications
High school education or equivalent required. At least 12 months of security, military, or law enforcement experience is preferred.
Ability to handle emergency situations calmly and effectively
Must have attention to detail and respond promptly and professionally when necessary
Be able to prioritize, organize, and follow up when needed
Possess strong verbal communication skills
Be a clear thinker, display the ability to remain calm, and show good judgment when resolving problems
Able to follow directions and commands as required
Work cohesively with co-workers as part of a team
Work with minimal supervision
Willingness to train and use handcuffs and OC spray
Maintain confidentiality of departmental and University information
Safely operate motorized vehicles, golf carts and other department-owned equipment
Must possess a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in the state of Maine
Must be certified or have the ability to be certified in First Aid, CPR/AED, Narcan, Stop the Bleed and other equipment as assigned
Abide by department core values of integrity, community-focused, accountability and teamwork
Ability to train and oversee the work of student staff when a Security Officer II is not available
Ability to perform all job duties
