Job Duties

Central State Hospital (CSH) is a 277 bed Joint Commission accredited psychiatric inpatient facility located in Petersburg, Virginia. CSH has proudly been serving citizens of the Commonwealth since 1870, when we opened our doors as the first psychiatric hospital in the country dedicated to the treatment of African Americans.

CSH maintains the only maximum-security treatment facility in the state (111 beds). We also have 166 beds available for individuals in the community who need inpatient care, as well as individuals in the criminal justice system. We believe that treatment should be holistic and focused on the person’s individual needs, recognizing that recovery is not linear or the same for every person. Treatment modalities may include medication, evidence-based group and individual therapy, peer support, psychosocial rehabilitation, vocational training, preparation for court, and treatment for substance use.

Central State Hospital is recruiting for a Part-Time Security Lieutenant to maintain security, custody and oversight over the patient population in the Maximum-Security Unit. To provide Supervision to Security Staff in the maximum-security forensic unit and ensure that staff are adhering to the Hospital and Departmental policies and procedures.

**Must be available to work evening shift 2p-10p. Also, every other weekend and up to 28 hours per week**

Job Duties Include:
Performance Management

Staff receive frequent, constructive feedback and coaching, including interim evaluations as appropriate;
Staff have the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities to accomplish goals and are evaluated for competency throughout the evaluation cycle;
The requirements of the performance planning and evaluation system are met and evaluations are completed by established deadlines with proper documentation;
Performance issues are addressed and documented as they occur in accordance with Hospital policy and the Standards of Conduct;
Unsatisfactory attendance and punctuality are addressed and documented as they occur in accordance with Hospital policy and the Standards of Conduct.
Safety issues are reviewed and communicated to assure a safe and healthy workplace; and
Staff have completed all mandated training requirements unless documented.
Actively works with staff in all departments to build a culture that encourages trust and transparency, and provides physical and psychological safety

Policy & Procedure Compliance

Ensures that staff is familiar with departmental policies & guidelines. 
Schedules & ensures staff attends mandated training on a yearly basis. 
Ensures policies & procedures are properly followed. 
Ensure that appropriate disciplinary action is given when warranted. 
Ensure that fire drills are completed monthly. 
Ensure that random routine ward searches are conducted on each ward monthly.
Instruct employees on Maximum Security Policy and Procedures

Documentation

Observes & records patient behavior in incident reports & makes log entries to record such actions 
Ensure that all vital information is recorded in the Supervisors Log 
Ensure that an email is sent to the Captains and Security Director for all security and safety issues.
Ensure staff schedules are reviewed for accuracy once approved and ensure that approved leave is submitted to the timekeeper once you receive the schedule. 
Ensure that Time clock adjustments and Leave slips are completed and submitted to the timekeeper daily.
Ensure no changes are made to schedules once approved by the Captain without prior approval. 
Ensure that incident reports completed by staff are on correct forms with accurate information. 
Complete shift post assignments and ensure that daily assignments are accurate. 
Document OT justification. 
Monitor staff attendance and punctuality. 
Maintain record of staff occurrences.

Ensure that staff adhere to Hospital and Departmental Policy and Procedure
Supervises assigned Safety and Security Technicians. 
Ensures completion of assignments. 
Make rounds on a daily basis checking for breeches in security, safety, and sanitation, and take action related to all detected deficiencies. 
Monitor and check Security Cameras and NVR’s in the Maximum Security Building.
Report issues with Security System/DVR’s/Cameras to the Security Management.
Troubleshoot Camera issues in the Civil Buildings and report outcome to Security Management.
Assist with Recruitment and Retention as assigned
Works closely with assigned Recruiter to assist in the recruitment process for open positions within the department.
Will review applications within the timeline provided by Human Resources, as well as provide Recruiter interview dates and selected panel members that meets the guidelines set forth by Human Resources. 
Complete interview packet in its entirety and return to assigned Recruiter within 48 hours of interview completion. 
Perform Drug screenings as needed on hospital employees and maintain privacy and integrity during the process.

Valid Virginia Driver’s License
Previous Security Experience
Supervisory /Leadership experience

KSA’s required to successfully to perform the job:
Requires basic knowledge of state laws, Driving skills.
Requires the ability to: Communicate both orally and in writing, Lift heavy objects, bend at waist and knees, walk or stand a minimum of 90% of the time on the shift, use upper extremities (hands) to hold, grasp and manipulate work materials, administer CPR, to work overtime hours. Ability to perform and adapt to new software and hardware technology to perform the duties of this role including but not limited to computers and scanners
