Job Responsibilities
Under the general supervision of the Shift Lieutenant, supervise subordinate security staff assigned to housing units and oversee inmate custody and control.
Conduct routine inspections of living areas for security, safety, and sanitation compliance.
Investigate alleged misconduct by inmates and security personnel.
Assist in conducting formal and informal counts.
Supervise security personnel’s job performance, conduct, and appearance; prepare employee evaluations.
Counsel staff, recommend disciplinary actions, and train subordinate staff to performance standards.
Prepare reports as needed or required.
Must successfully complete an eight-week SCDC Basic Training upon hire.
Minimum and Additional Requirements
High school diploma and relevant experience; a bachelor’s degree in a related field may substitute for experience. Eighteen months of experience in correctional, security, military, or police work required. A degree in criminal justice or a related field may substitute for half of the required experience. Certification by the South Carolina Department of Corrections Training Academy and successful completion of the Basic Supervisory Course within six months of employment are required.
