Description
Special Police Officers (SPO’s) will provide protective services for the patients, families, staff, and property of Children’s National Health System (CNHS). As directed, CNHS SPO’s respond to emergency situations while enforcing the established hospital policies and in accordance with the laws of the District of Columbia. Department personnel must maintain a tactful and courteous demeanor in the exercising of duties. Will perform access control using state of the art technology in order to ensure the safety of patients.
Will perform security patrols of the entire campus to proactively identify risks to the hospital. Frequently works with medical professionals inadvancementofpatient safety.
Qualifications
Minimum Education
High School Diploma or GED (Required)
Minimum Work Experience
2 years Work experience as a Special Police Officer (Preferred)
Required Skills/Knowledge
Valid US Driver’s license required.
Effective oral and writtencommunication skills.
Must be able to sit and stand for prolonged periods of time.
Must be able to climb stairs in response to emergency situations.
Must be able to wear department issued body armor.
Must be able to work outdoors if necessary.
Ability to handle volatile situations under stressful conditions.
Familiarity with Microsoft Office.
Must possess excellent customer service skills.
Knowledge of the criminal code in Washington, DC.
Experience working as an emergency responder (law enforcement, fire/rescue, military).
Knowledge of HIPAA rules and restrictions.
Required Licenses and Certifications
Special Police Officer commission from the Washington DC Metropolitan Police Department. Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) (Required).
Functional Accountabilities
Safety
Perform productive security patrols of the hospital, garage and perimeter; recognize conditions which are or will compromise the security and/or safety of the organization and take immediate action to mitigate; proactively and consistently submit work orders to correct safety/security violations discovered during patrols.
Immediately notify supervisors of security/safety-related problems or issues.
Take proactive measures to mitigate thefts, disturbances and other criminal incidents.
Check to ensure that visitors and staff members are wearing proper identification badges/passes; ensure that visitors are properly identified and proactively address issues with non-compliance with visitors which are observed during patrols; adhere to departmental and hospital policies, procedures and directives as it relates to the management and processing of visitors to the hospital.
Adhere to post orders for all fixed and patrol positions.
Emergency Response
Ensure a timely and appropriate response for emergency situations.
Ensure that the applicable policies, procedures and directives are followed according to the specifics of the emergency situation.
Able to effectively de-escalate disruptive behavior.
Able to remain in control of emotions and not take acting out behavior exhibited by others personally.
