Special Security Representative (SSR) Jobs in Laurel, MD at Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory (APL)

Reporting directly to the Manager of Campus Security, the Campus Security Supervisor assumes an armed role, offering supplementary assistance in shaping the leadership and strategic direction of Campus Security Operations. Operating under broad guidance, this position plays a pivotal role in assisting the Manager of Campus Security in safeguarding the institution’s facilities, assets, and personnel. In the capacity of the Campus Security Supervisor, the incumbent will serve as the primary point of contact for security operations and assume oversight of the campus security guards on the Oregon campus.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge and understanding of CLERY and other necessary security-related compliance procedures, requirements, and literature.
Working knowledge of public safety protocols, mandates, laws, and regulations.
Working understanding of the powers of arrest.
Strong computer skills, specifically the ability to utilize Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook and other required software programs.
Strong verbal and written communication skills; abilities must include effectively communicating with WesternU students, administration, faculty, staff, visitors, and outside contacts.
Excellent customer service skills with special capabilities in working with all internal WesternU members and external members of the community.
Must have experience in conducting formal investigations, including but not limited to, the ability to gather facts and evidence in the manner required to ensure proper documentation for civil or criminal prosecution.
Required Qualifications
Education: Any combination of education and/or experience equivalent to a bachelor’s degree or any combination of training or experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to oversee a campus security operation.
Experience: Minimum 5 years in the security field with 3 in a security supervisor role.
Certifications/Licenses and Qualifications: Must Possess a current Armed Professional and Executive Manager license issued by the State of Oregon DPSST.
Training: FEMA (Incident Command Course Modules such as 100HE, 200, 700, 800),
Background Checks: Must pass the CORI criminal background check.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in a higher education campus safety/security operation preferred.
Law Enforcement background or police academy training preferred.
Essential Job Duties

Key Responsibilities
Safeguard the lives and property of Western University of Health Sciences (WesternU) Oregon.

Promote and maintain safety at the University by supporting the efforts of Campus Security Officers and local Public Safety departments.

Enforce all approved and current security protocols, policies, and procedures. As needed, update and develop current or new security protocols, policies, and procedures.

Oversee the coordination of campus personnel during an emergency situation.

Key Responsibilities
Actively evaluate on-campus incidents, recommend, and take necessary actions to maintain the safety and security of WesternU’s students, administration, faculty, staff, and property. Keep track of reported incidents for further review and reporting. Be prepared to create and present a report of incidents with recommendations for limiting recurrences and/or future course-of-action plans for any repeated incidents.

Act as liaison to both public law enforcement agencies and fire departments.

Oversee the planning and implementation of security operations during high-risk events.

Oversee and facilitate the use of on-campus surveillance equipment.

Work in coordination with Access Control with regards to the card access system.

Key Responsibilities
Provide necessary orientation and training on appropriate security rules and procedures to contracted security personnel. Act as the core WesternU liaison to the contracted security service company and assist in the management of contracted security staff.

Key Responsibilities
Work in coordination with the Manager of Campus Security to maintain the appropriate supply demand of security tools and equipment in order for security operations to continue with little to no interruption. This includes, but is not limited to, assessing on-hand inventory, placing orders, and determining the need for updated tools and/or equipment.

The Campus Security Supervisor operates in a dynamic environment that involves both office and field settings. The noise levels can vary based on the location and activities.
Office-based: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to use hands to operate a PC in the performance of job duties and talk or hear. The employee is regularly required to sit, and reach with hands and arms, and occasionally required to stand, walk, stoop, and smell. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close, distance, and peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to focus.
