Job Title: Security Officer
Wage $20.40/hr upon successful completion of probationary period
$19.40/hr. – For 6 months’ probation
($18.40/ hr – For 6 months Training- if needed)

Special Information: Missoula Correctional Services, Inc. is a non-profit corporation formed to provide alternative correctional programs in the Missoulacommunity. The position requires a current State of Montana driver’s license. Mental demands are paramount due to the intensity of the work and the emotional demands of residents. Physical demands include the ability to restrain inmates in crisis situations, ability to observe and hear inmates, and adequate strength to lift 50 pounds. Therefore, the Security Officer needs to be in good physical condition and mobile. The Center is a 24-hour facility.
There are 4 positions currently open,
Day Shift – The work schedule is 7:00a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
Night Shift – The work schedule is 11:00 p.m. to 07:00 a.m.
Swing Shift – The work schedule is 3:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m.
Due to the nature and functions of the Pre-Release Center, the applicant must have some flexibility and be willing to work various hours and schedules to cover vacations and activities.

Agency Description: The Missoula Pre-Release Center serves 90 adult male and 20 female inmates who have been committed to the Montana State Prison or the Department of Corrections and subsequently transferred to the Center. The Center provides housing, food services, counseling, supervision, life skills training and referral services for all residents. The primary emphasis of the program is to provide residents with assistance needed for successful reintegration into the community.
Typical Duties: (Not all inclusive) Maintains security of facility: Issues incident reports to residents for any rule infraction; conducts weekly room searches, personal searches; administers breathalyzer tests and obtains urine samples from residents; conducts random and assigned checks of residents’ locations in community; informing supervisor of any major violations or unusual resident behavior; documenting unusual resident behavior or information needed by other staff members; keeping Center areas locked which are unauthorized to the residents and public; provides crisis intervention when necessary to maintain orderly operation of Center; answering incoming calls & documents information received; conducts hourly head counts; checks all mechanical and electrical security apparatus; conducts surveillance of building & grounds; monitors resident movement through use of daily schedules & corresponding forms; and keeps records of a resident’s personal and Center property inventory. Insures safety standards are being met by notifying Director of Security of any electrical, plumbing, vehicle, or building repairs needed; following standards outlined in program policy manuals; conducting fire drills; checking smoke alarms; checking resident household duties; knowing and administering First Aid; administering resident medication as prescribed; making repairs as directed; reporting hazards and accident in the work placed; maintaining awareness of emergency procedures. Assists in performance of clerical duties by filing resident information; copying & establishing client files; maintaining adequate supplies of Center forms; completing word process as assigned. All actions require that documentation be made by Security Officer. The Security Officer will demonstrate an ability to work within structure of Missoula Pre-Release Center by maintaining good personal hygiene & good physical conditioning; being consistent in following rules, regulations, and policies; being punctual in attendance and working shifts as scheduled; attending staff meetings and training as required; completing duties in time lines specified; being assertive with coworkers, supervisors, & community contacts; making decision based on objective info considering the need to both the MCS clients and the community; following directions given by supervisor; & performing related duties as assigned.
Qualifications: Knowledge of security practices, methods and techniques in a correctional setting, interpersonal communication and conflict resolution. Skill in the use of security equipment and self defense techniques. Ability to physically restrain an individual if necessary; to effectively communicate verbally and in written form; attend to details of monitoring individual programs; understand and interpret verbal and written instructions; operate a motor vehicle; apply rules and regulations; carry out facility policies; make appropriate decisions within the limits of authority; and function effectively under stressful conditions.
Education and Experience: The knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the duties of this position are usually acquired through high school graduation and one year of security officer, Military, or related law enforcement experience. An applicant that does not meet the experience required may be considered for a training position with a lesser salary.
Application and Selection Process: Selection procedures to be used in evaluating applicants’ qualifications may include, but are not limited to, an evaluation of the Application form; a structured interview; a written questionnaire; a performance test and reference checks. The successful candidate must pass a thorough background investigation. The applicant must also be found to be insurable via a check with the MontanaMotor Vehicle’s Records Department. Upon offer of employment, the candidate will be required to take and pass a physical examination which demonstrates that the applicant is capable of performing the physical required duties of this position. The applicant will be required to take a TB test, as well as sign a Non-Dissemination and Non-Solicitation Agreement.
The successful candidate will be required to obtain a First Aid/CPR card within the first six months of
employment.

Compensation: This position’s wage is $ 37,440+ annually. Benefits include ten (10) working days of
annual leave, sick leave, and ten (10) days of holiday leave per year.
Immigration Reform and Control Act: In accordance with the Immigration Reform and Control Act,
an employee is unable to provide the required document or documents within three days, he or she must
at least produce (within three days) a receipt showing that he or she has applied for the document.
The employee must produce the document itself within 21 days of the hire. Examples of such documentation include a birth certificate or Social Security card along with a driver’s license or other picture I.D., a U.S. passport or a green card.
