Position Overview

The Illinois Department of Public Health is seeking a highly motivated individual to serve as a Surveillance Public Health Program Specialist II. This position is responsible for implementing surveillance of selected communicable diseases, including but not limited to respiratory diseases, monitoring communicable disease cases and outbreaks, providing technical assistance to local health authorities and practitioners relative to necessary detection, control and reporting measures to implement, and developing and improving systems for local health department staff, providers and systems for analysis of seasonal respiratory data.

Job Responsibilities

Monitors surveillance of selected communicable diseases, including but not limited to respiratory diseases. Monitors and analyzes communicable disease data to determine any change in disease trends. Performs quality control checks to validate accuracy of data. Develops statistical reports of the section’s morbidity data, transmits and monitors weekly morbidity data to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention using the Illinois National Electronic Disease Surveillance System (I-NEDSS).
Monitors disease outbreaks. Provides technical assistance to local health authorities and practitioners relative to necessary detection, control and reporting measures to implement. Maintains and reviews outbreak information in the Outbreak Reporting System (ORS).
Develops and improves systems for local health department staff, providers, and healthcare systems for analysis of seasonal respiratory data. Reviews and updates activity reports. Develops and improves communication materials.
Assists with the development of guidance on selected communicable diseases. Reviews current guidance to determine needed updates.
Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications 1

Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to the completion of four years college with courses in health education, physical and biological sciences.
Requires two years professional experience in a health education or investigation program in the public or private sector.

Preferred Qualifications

Master’s degree in public health with focus in epidemiology.
One year experience coordinating training programs and consultations for public health professionals.
Working knowledge of prevention and control of infectious diseases.
One year professional experience investigating individual cases of communicable disease.
One year professional experience participating in the investigation of outbreaks of communicable disease.
Working knowledge of computer applications, including Microsoft Office Suite products
One year experience with the Illinois National Electronic Disease Surveillance System.
