About the NC Division of Employment SecurityThe North Carolina Department of Commerce Division of Employment Security (DES) is responsible for administrating the State of North Carolina unemployment insurance program. State unemployment insurance benefits are paid to eligible workers who lose employment through no fault of their own and are able and available for work and actively seeking work.

The state unemployment insurance program is a federal-state partnership, and benefits are funded by state unemployment taxes employers pay on employee wages. DES’ administrative costs are federally funded based on the state’s claims workload. The division receives no administrative funding from North Carolina’s

General Fund. Among its duties, DES is required to:Take initial claims for unemployment benefits. Determine claimants’ eligibility for benefits.

Provide an appeal opportunity for claimants and employers. Collect quarterly state unemployment taxes and wage records from employers. The NC Division of Employment Security’s Information Systems is seeking a Cybersecurity Summer Intern.

The Cybersecurity Summer Intern will work to improve cybersecurity efforts and minimize risks at the Division of Employment Security. Their responsibilities will include documenting security tasks, monitoring security tools daily, and analyzing security threats. The intern will get to work with an enterprise security team, learn how to use multiple enterprise security products and develop communication and documentation skills.

The Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) and security team staff will mentor the intern and provide hands-on learning opportunities to manage and reduce security risks.  Specific duties:Documentation of security tasks

Daily and weekly monitoring of security tasks

Security threat analysis

This posting is for a full-time Cybersecurity Summer Intern in the Information Systems Unit of the North Carolina Division of Employment Security (DES) within the North Carolina Department of Commerce. This internship is part of the DES Rising Stars Internship Program. The Rising Stars program is open to rising sophomores, juniors, and seniors currently enrolled in an accredited Community College, 4-year College or University, Graduate School, or Law School.

The internship will start on May 13, 2024, last 12 weeks, and end on August 2, 2024. The work schedule is full-time, 40 hours per week (Monday – Friday, 8 am – 5 pm.) The rate of pay is $15.00 per hour.

This position will be located at 700 Wade Ave., Raleigh, NC 27605. Depending on business need and job suitability, this position may be a candidate for telework, subject to management approval.   Steps to apply for this internship:Complete the online job application.
