Instituto del Progreso Latino is a community organization whose mission is to contribute to the fullest development of Latino(a) immigrants and their families through education, training and employment that fosters participation in the changing U.S. society while preserving cultural identity and dignity. Founded in 1977 to help Latino’s learn basic skills, pass the civil service exam and obtain higher paying post office jobs, Instituto has grown to a flourishing educational center serving over 14,000 Chicago families per year.
Instituto del Progreso Latino, Instituto Justice and Leadership Career Academy and Instituto Health Science Career Academy along with Chicago Public Schools (CPS) has set ambitious goals to ensure that every individual and child-in every school and every neighborhood—has access to a world-class learning experience from birth, resulting in graduation from high school college- and career-ready. In alignment with CPS/ISBE, our school strives to provide high quality and specially designed instructional supports and services for all students with disabilities within the least restrictive environment.
POSITION DESCRIPTION
The Safety & Security Officer responds to emergencies, intervenes in interpersonal conflicts, and directs students and staff in crisis situations. Safety & Security Monitors will help provide a safe learning environment for our students, educators, staff and guests. Assist and support with student behavior management and helping students that require additional guidance. Safety & Security Officers supervise students and guests during arrivals, visitations, class transition, lunch, and in-school/after school activities as well as monitor all three buildings and parking lots.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Monitor all arrivals, dismissal, parking lots, class transitions, lunch, in-school/after school activities and special events
Making sure all areas are clear and all students are in class
Report Suspicious behaviors and incidences
Assist with student early dismissals
Retrieving and guiding students and guests to their destination
Enforcing the school’s hallway and bathroom pass policies
Monitor during all check-in and check-out processes
Assist with conflict-resolution and De-escalating conflicts
Responding to and reporting all inappropriate and/or suspicious behavior to their supervisor
Assist with school safety drills such as, fire drills, lockdowns, tornado drills, bus evacuation drills
Ensure that Instituto property is not damaged and is taken care of properly
Ensure the safety of all individuals
Perform other-job related duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE / EDUCATION
Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree preferred
Bilingual English/Spanish preferred
3 years’ experience in a school setting preferred
Experience working with adolescents is highly desired
Ability to multi-task and work in a quick-paced and dynamic environment
Maintain a high sense of confidentiality
Ability to work with a diverse group of people
Team player
Ability to work independently
Have exceptional organization and time management skills
Have an excellent “customer” service attitude
Willing to learn and grow

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Nature of work requires an ability to operate standard business office equipment. Requires ability to communicate and exchange information, collect, compile and prepare work documents, set-up and maintain work files. Approximately 50% of time spent standing, some lifting (under 20 lbs.)

WORKING CONDITIONS
Majority of work is distributed through-out the organization’s locations and is not limited to one specific area. Light travel, with-in walking distance (less than 2 square blocks to and from all locations). Position requires availability for extended hours plus non-traditional hours required to perform job duties. Also requires participation and attendance at organization sponsored events and meetings.
